1. No restrictions on verification of WeChat Official Account (OA)

WeChat Official Account (OA) comes with a badge just like a verified Facebook or Instagram business page. Only, in this case, you’ll know an account is verified if you see an orange tick mark (instead of the usual blue) beside the page name.  

Earning your customer’s trust on social media platforms is a must nowadays. It is recommended to get your business account verified on all social media platforms. This includes setting up a WeChat Official Account especially if your goal is to target Chinese consumers. 

And luckily, WeChat OA verification does not have any industry restriction, all brands are welcome to apply.

2. Conditions for WeChat Advertising

Before starting your journey on WeChat Advertising, there are 2 things to follow: Firstly, make sure you have a Verified WeChat Official Account (OA). Then make sure that your brand is not in the prohibited list of WeChat Advertising. 

2.1 Have Your WeChat Verified Official Account Ready

To apply for WeChat Ads account, all foreign entities have to apply through WeChat official sales partner overseas. Based on the actual operation, WeChat generally requires the brand to have a verified WeChat OA and has published at least 2 articles before applying for an ad account.

2.2 WeChat Advertising Policies – Industry Entry

In China, they have theALPRC Guidelines (Advertising Law of the People’s Republic of China). All social media platforms in China like Weibo, WeChat, Baidu, TouTiao, DouYin, and other sites have to follow the rules & regulations.

Here is the list of prohibited products or services according to China’s advertising law. 

  • Financial investments (case by case)  
  • Medical industry  
  • Gambling/betting 
  • Superstition 
  • Tobacco 
  • Pornography
  • Horror 
  • Surrogacy services  
  • Fraud 
  • Accreditation services

On top of that, WeChat advertising has more industry restrictionsUnlike Weibo ads and Toutiao ads, WeChat advertising does not allow entities beyond China to promote overseas real estate investment and leasing.

3. Geo-targeting users beyond China through WeChat Advertising, limited to 14 industries

WeChat Ads support targeted advertising for overseas WeChat users (outside mainland China) who have stayed in the country or region for more than 30 days. 

Ads are recommended based on the users’ current place of residence for improved advertising effectiveness. Unfortunately, not all industries are qualified to do geo-targeting ads on WeChat. 

Until Q4 2020, geo-targeting users beyond China is only supported in 9 regional countries and only open to 14 industries. Geo-targeting will be available when the conditions are met. 

9 Available Regions​: Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Macao, Japan​, Australia, New Zealand, Canada 

14 Eligible Industries​: Travel, clothing & accessories, skincare & makeups, home decor, transportation, wedding services, retail, automobiles, general merchandise, lifestyle services, digital devices & home appliances, virtual goods, sports & outdoors, watches & jewellery
